Greek Women at Their Loom

How the story of Homer's Odyssey might be told from the perspective of the women left behind. As a young bride and mother, Odysseus' wife, Penelope, takes control in Ithaca. She manages through wits and wiles to protect her children and her husband's kingdom from predatory men who wish to seize power. Xanthe, a daughter born after Odysseus' departure for Troy, narrates her story at the age of nineteen, as the battle of the suitors rages in the palace. Through her life experiences in Ithaca and in the court of Helen of Sparta (better known as Helen of Troy), the themes and characters from the Odyssey are rewoven into a tale in which women are heroes in their own right.

"If you are in difficulties with a book, try the element of surprise: attack it at an hour when it isn't expecting it." H.G. Wells
